How to effectively clean your book cases
Thursday, January 26th, 2012Dust will always find a way to accumulate on just about everything in your house, especially in your book case. This is made worse if you live in a location where it is common practice to leave the windows open to enjoy the breeze. It is frustrating enough to get rid of dust on a flat surface; so imagine the nightmare that you face when it is time to clean the book cases. Dust seems to love book cases as they are a perfect hiding place for dust; however, for us dust means breathing problems, an irritant for sensitive eyes and of course it is quite unsightly.
As annoying as it is to clean your bookcase, it has to be done. So here are some cleaning tips for keeping your bookcase clean and looking like the amazing piece of furniture that it is.
- Have the Right Cleaning Materials: The first thing that you will need to tackle the daunting task of cleaning your book case are the right cleaning materials. One of the mistakes that people tend to make with cleaning their book cases or any piece of furniture is using a dry cloth or feather duster. This is bad for cleaning as they merely move the dust from one place to the next. When dusting the best tool to use is an electrostatic charge or a damp cloth, as they will get your bookcases cleaner and keep them dust free longer.
- Cleaning Strategy: Now that you have the correct cleaning materials on hand, it is now time to commence cleaning. The most effective way of cleaning book cases is to start from the top then work your way slowly to the bottom. This is the best method as dust will naturally fall to the floor and will fall on some of the other shelves as well. The last thing that you want to do is dust a particular shelf twice.
You will also want to ensure that you carefully remove all the books in your book case and clean each shelf. Ensure that before you replace the books on the shelf that you also dust the books; as replacing dirty books on your book case will make it look as if it was never cleaned. Finally be sure to vacuum the area once dusting is complete.
